10 Things That May Surprise You About Victoria Falls

You’ve booked a holiday to Victoria Falls, which means something about this remarkable destination captured your imagination. We applaud your excellent taste, but even the most stunning photographs can’t prepare you for everything that awaits.

Some of the most memorable moments here are the details you don’t expect, the encounters you never planned for, and the experiences that only make sense once you’ve lived them.

At Ilala Lodge Hotel, we’ve been welcoming guests to Victoria Falls since 1991 and over the years, we’ve watched thousands of first-time visitors arrive with high expectations, only to leave a few days later with an even deeper appreciation for this special place.

So, in no particular order, here are ten things that may or may not surprise you about Victoria Falls.

    1. Town is Walkable

Victoria Falls town covers roughly between 20 and 30 square kilometres and has a population of around 35 000. Most of what a guest needs, like the Victoria Falls National Park entrance, the main street, restaurants, craft markets, and our hotel, sits within comfortable walking distance of the town centre.

Guests of Ilala Lodge Hotel are five minutes from the Falls on foot. This compactness is one of our destination’s great practical advantages: you spend your time here, not in transit.

    2. You Hear the Falls Before You See Them

The first thing that often surprises visitors is that you hear The Smoke That Thunders long before you see it. On still days, the distant roar carries all the way to the terrace at Ilala Lodge Hotel. On quiet nights, many guests even drift off to sleep to its steady rumble.

Of course, it makes sense that more than a kilometre of cascading water would make a tremendous sound. But knowing that and actually hearing it – feeling its deep, resonant power in your chest – are two very different things.

    3. Wildlife Doesn’t Stay in the Park

The boundary between Victoria Falls National Park and the town is a porous one. Elephants wander through the streets with enough regularity that it is simply part of life here, warthogs are a permanent fixture on hotel lawns (including ours) and vervet monkeys occupy the trees along the main road.

The advice for any encounter with a wild animal is the same as it is in any game reserve: give them space and don’t approach. The presence of wildlife in town is not a hazard to be managed so much as a reminder of where you are. Overall, wild animals avoid human settlements, and at no point will you feel threatened by their presence.

    4. The Difference Between Seasons

When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls? It is the most common question we are asked, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want to see.

At peak flow (March to May), the Zambezi is running at full force and the Falls are thunderous, the mist rising high enough to be visible from kilometres away. The spray from the waterfall is so dense that walking the cliff path feels like walking through warm rain, colours are extra vivid and moonbows appear on full moon nights. The trade-off is visibility. At high flow, the mist can obscure the view of the Falls.

By July and August, water levels have dropped and the Falls look entirely different; quieter, more defined, with the full rock face of the gorge visible and the cliff path walkable with minimal spray. This is also peak safari season, with wildlife concentrating around the river and game viewing in Hwange National Park and Chobe National Park (Botswana) at its most rewarding.

Neither season is better – they are simply different, and both are worth the trip.

    5. Low Water is Beautiful

Many guests who visit in July and August worry, having read about the spectacle of peak flow, that they are seeing the falls at the ‘wrong’ time. They are not.

For photography, game viewing, gorge activities, white water rafting, clear skies and cool mornings, low water season is arguably one of the best times to visit Victoria Falls.

    6. The Moonbow is Real

On the three nights surrounding each full moon, between roughly March and June, a rainbow forms in the mist of Victoria Falls after dark. It is called a “moonbow,” formed by moonlight rather than sunlight, and visible as a pale, luminous arc rising from the gorge.

To the naked eye it appears white or silver, but long-exposure photography reveals the full spectrum of colour within it. Victoria Falls National Park opens on these nights for guided lunar rainbow tours. Most first-time visitors have never heard of it.

For a full guide to the moonbow and when to see it, see our dedicated blog post on the lunar rainbow experience.

    7. Four Countries Meet on Your Doorstep

Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia converge within a short drive of Victoria Falls town.

    • Livingstone in Zambia is 11km away across the Victoria Falls Bridge.
    • Chobe National Park in Botswana is 80km via the Kazungula Border Post.
    • The Namibian border at Katima Mulilo is around 210 km away.

This geographic position makes Victoria Falls one of southern Africa’s great travel hubs – a base from which to extend a trip in almost any direction.

    8. Seamless Border Crossings

Here in Africa, we’re used to logistical quirks, if you will, but the Victoria Falls Bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia is one of the most straightforward international crossings out. A simple bridge pass, collected at no cost from the immigration counter at the Zimbabwe side, allows you to cross the bridge on foot, take in the gorge views from the middle, and return without formally entering Zambia.

For a full day trip to Livingstone, the crossing itself takes minutes. The KAZA Univisa, which covers both countries and allows a day visit to Botswana, is available at the airport and the border post and removes most of the administrative complexity.

    9. Solo Travel Works Well Here

Victoria Falls town is structured in ways that suit solo travellers. The town is walkable, English is spoken everywhere, and virtually every activity on offer – river cruises, helicopter flights, game drives, guided walks – operates as a group departure. You book a seat, show up, and spend the day alongside other travellers from around the world. The social infrastructure of the destination is built in.

For a full guide to solo travel in Victoria Falls, see our dedicated blog post.

    10. Where You Stay Matters

The question of when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls matters, but not as much as where you base yourself. We think that the closer you are to the Falls, the more spontaneous and immersive your visit becomes. Our hotel, within easy walking distance, means returning for a second visit on a whim, stepping out before breakfast to hear the thunder of the water, or wandering back at sunset without needing a transfer.

Ilala Lodge Hotel is the closest hotel to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side, meaning that the ambience it creates is a consistent part of your stay.

  • Why Victoria Falls is One of Africa’s Best Solo Travel Destinations

Why Victoria Falls is One of Africa’s Best Solo Travel Destinations

Travelling to Victoria Falls on your own? You might be surprised by just how easy, safe and rewarding it can be.

As more people choose to travel independently, Victoria Falls has emerged as a destination that’s particularly well suited to solo adventurers – especially women, one of the fastest-growing travel demographics worldwide.

Travelling solo offers something group trips often can’t: complete freedom to explore at your own pace, follow your curiosity and create an experience that’s entirely your own. If you’re wondering whether Victoria Falls is the right destination for a solo escape, we’ll show you why it ticks all the boxes, and how staying at Ilala Lodge Hotel makes planning your trip simpler than you might expect.

A Destination That Works for One

Victoria Falls is a small, walkable town built around a single extraordinary natural attraction. The main street forms the spine of the town, making the rest easy to navigate. The activities on offer, like river cruises, helicopter flights, game drives and rafting, are almost all run as group departures, which means joining them solo is entirely normal. You book a seat, show up, and spend a few hours alongside other travellers from around the world.

Victoria Falls trips also tend to be self-contained in a way that suits solo travel. You do not need to hire a car, negotiate complicated logistics, or find your way across unfamiliar terrain without support. The town is compact, operators are accredited and easy to book through your hotel, and the Falls themselves are a five-minute walk from Ilala Lodge Hotel’s front gate. (Literally just down the road!)

    On the Question of Safety

When it comes to matters like safety, we believe you deserve a direct answer.

Victoria Falls is widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s safest tourist destinations, with violent crime against visitors being rare. As with any popular travel destination, the usual precautions apply: stay aware of your surroundings, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid walking alone after dark. Street vendors in busy tourist areas can be persistent, but a polite, firm “no thank you” is usually all that’s needed.

The main attractions are easy to explore independently during the day. The rainforest trails and viewing points at the Falls are well maintained, clearly marked and regularly patrolled, making them accessible and comfortable for solo visitors. For day trips to destinations such as Chobe National Park, Hwange National Park or Livingstone, booking through a reputable operator (ideally one recommended by our Activities Desk) takes the stress out of planning and ensures you’re in experienced hands.

    Practical Considerations for Solo Travellers

A few things worth knowing before you go:

    • Language: English is widely spoken in Victoria Falls. Menus, signage, activities, and conversations at the hotel are all conducted in English.
    • Transfers: If you are flying into Victoria Falls Airport, arrange an airport transfer in advance rather than negotiating independently on arrival. Ilala Lodge Hotel offers direct airport collection: you step off the plane, are met by name, and arrive at the hotel without any in-between. The same applies on departure.
    • Taxis and transport: For any in-town movement beyond walking distance, the hotel’s front desk can arrange reliable transport on your behalf. This is preferable to hailing taxis independently, particularly at night.
    • Activities: Pre-booking activities through the hotel’s activities desk means you are always accounted for. Someone knows where you are, who you are with, and when you are expected back.
    • Borders: If you plan to cross into Zambia for a day trip to Livingstone, or into Botswana for Chobe, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and look into the KAZA Univisa, which covers multiple entries between Zimbabwe and Zambia and allows a day visit to Botswana.

    An Enriching Experience

Travelling on your own can be an incredibly empowering experience. You need a good base, a bit of planning, and the willingness to go.

It is also more social than most people expect. Group activities create easy, low-pressure points of connection with other travellers; something you’re more likely to attempt when you don’t have the comfort of familiar people to lean into. A sundowner cruise on the Zambezi seats you alongside people from a dozen different countries. The communal areas in our hotel (the restaurant, the pool terrace, the bar) are places where conversations start naturally. You can participate as much or as little as you like.

Why Ilala Works for Solo Travellers

Location is the primary reason. Ilala Lodge Hotel sits in the centre of Victoria Falls town, within walking distance of the national park entrance, the main street, restaurants, and the majority of the town’s key attractions. For a solo traveller, walking means independence without exposure and the ability to come and go at the drop of a hat.

Furthermore, our hotel has 24-hour reception. The garden and communal areas, like the pool terrace, Cassia Restaurant and the bar, are inviting spaces where you are likely to encounter other guests, but equally able to find a quiet corner if solitude is what you’re after. The staff are genuinely welcoming in the way that family-run properties tend to be: attentive without being intrusive, helpful without making you feel like a problem to be managed.

The activities desk coordinates everything you might want to do, including arranging reliable operators, confirming timings, and ensuring you are collected and returned safely. If you need a shuttle across town, they will sort it. If you need a transfer to the airport at 5am, we will have someone waiting.

    Stay With Us

Whether it’s your first solo trip or your tenth, Ilala Lodge Hotel offers a calm, elegant base from which to experience Victoria Falls at its best.

For first-time visitors, we’re an ideal introduction; not only to Victoria Falls, but to this region of Zimbabwe, which is within day trip distance of destinations in Zambia and Botswana as well.

  • The Legendary Victoria Falls Lunar Rainbows

The Legendary Victoria Falls Lunar Rainbows

Most travellers arrive at Victoria Falls expecting the extraordinary and, make no mistake – the Falls deliver. There is little that can prepare you for the thundering wall of water as it crashes into the gorge and the resulting spray that rises from it like smoke. It’s truly awe-inspiring, especially when you see all the small rainbows dancing in the droplets; a result of the sun and water that create conditions for their near consistent presence.

But there is another phenomenon here, one that takes place after dark and that far fewer visitors know to look for: lunar rainbows.

Also known as “moonbows“, these are exactly what they sound like – rainbows formed by moonlight rather than sunlight. And Victoria Falls happens to be one of the best places on Earth to witness one.

What Exactly Is a Lunar Rainbow?

A moonbow forms through the same process as a daytime rainbow: Light is refracted through water droplets suspended in the air. The difference is that the light source is the moon rather than the sun. Because moonlight is far less intense than sunlight, the colours of a moonbow are much fainter, often appearing as a glowing white or silver arc to the naked eye. Long-exposure photography, however, reveals the full spectrum of colour hidden within.

For a moonbow to appear, three conditions must align: A full moon, clear skies, and a generous volume of mist. Victoria Falls provides that third ingredient in abundance, making it one of the most reliable locations in the world to witness the phenomenon.

When to See It: Timing Your Visit

The lunar rainbow is only visible on a handful of nights each month, and then only when conditions are right: The night before, the night of, and the night after the full moon. Outside of these three nights, the moon rarely casts enough light to produce a visible arc.

In terms of the best season to see a moonbow during your stay with us, March through June is widely regarded as the prime window. This coincides with the high-water period on the Zambezi, when the river is running at its strongest following the rainy season. The result is a tremendous volume of rising spray, which makes for large, powerful moonbows.

The upcoming full moon dates to note are:

2 April 2026 (Pink Moon): Typically the strongest month for water flow and mist
1 May 1 and 31 May 2026 (Flower Moon and Blue Moon): A rare double opportunity in a single month

One practical note: While abundant spray makes for a bigger moonbow, extremely heavy mist at peak flow can sometimes obscure the view entirely. The sweet spot is a strong, but not overwhelming, mist, which tends to fall in the weeks either side of absolute peak, making late March and early April a particularly good window.

Where to Stand: The Best Viewing Points

Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side opens on specific nights for lunar rainbow tours, typically the three nights surrounding the full moon. Entry to the rainforest is included with a guided tour, which can be arranged directly through the hotel. To see the moonbow, you need the moon behind you and the Falls’ spray in front – this means positioning yourself to look westward in the hours after moonrise.

The advantage of staying at Ilala Lodge Hotel is proximity; a short walk (5 minutes) brings you to the entrance of the national park, and the sound of the falls (never entirely absent from the hotel grounds) will already be your companion as you set out for the night.

    Get Lunar Tour times here.

    What to Expect

Arrive after dark, torch in hand, and follow the path through the rainforest. Remember to bring a waterproof later and a dry bag for your digital items and camera.

When the conditions are right, your moonbow will appear as a pale, luminous arc rising from the gorge, with some visitors even describing it as “ghostly”. Though not mandatory, guided tours add context to your experience, with guides explaining the science of how it forms and going a little bit into the history of the Falls.

Photographers should bring a tripod and be prepared for long exposures of 15 to 30 seconds or more. This is where the colour of the moonbows, which the naked eye cannot see, reveals itself.

  • Your Guide to a December Getaway in Victoria Falls

Your Guide to a December Getaway in Victoria Falls

Welcome to December in Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and your playground over the Festive Season!

Summer has arrived in Victoria Falls and to say we can feel it is an understatement! Mist rises from the gorge of a thunderous drop as the Zambezi River crashes down over the Falls, the rainforest pulses with heat and humidity and everywhere drinks are becoming more colourful and topped up with increasing quantities of ice! In the afternoon, the heavens fracture with thunderstorms – over as quickly as they begin – casting the landscape in dramatic colours and infusing the surroundings with greenery and a liveliness that feels infectious.

For travellers, it’s a season of discovery, of slow breakfasts on shady verandas, of river cruises and rainforest walks, of festive dining and soft summer evenings that seem to linger over ‘just one more glass’ of wine. (You know the kind we’re talking about…)

From our central location, Ilala Lodge Hotel offers the perfect base to experience it all. Whether you’re escaping a northern winter or seeking a holiday close to home, here’s your guide to the best things to do in Victoria Falls this December!

Experience the Falls in Full Flow

As the summer rains continue, the volume of water in the Zambezi River begins to rise, creating an extraordinary spectacle of mist, rainbows, and sound when it crashes over the basalt edge of the Falls. The pathways through the rainforest offer a series of viewpoints, each revealing a different face of this natural wonder, from the thundering Main Falls to the quieter corners near the Devil’s Cataract.

Mornings are particularly magical, when the light is soft and the crowds are slightly thinner, but a midday viewing is equally spectacular, when you can expect a full drenching from the spray – a great way to stay cool! (Just remember to protect your electronics in a dry bag.)

Sunset Cruises on the Zambezi River

No visit to Victoria Falls is complete without a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi. December’s warm evenings and glowing skies set the stage for one of the most tranquil experiences our region has to offer – especially if bungee jumping off of bridges isn’t your scene. Rather: Glide past hippos wallowing in the shallows and elephants coming down to drink, all while sipping a chilled sundowner as the sun dips below the horizon.

We recommend browsing the Ra-Ikane River Cruise options, the boats for which dock at our sister property, Palm River Hotel.

    Festive Dining at Cassia Restaurant

At Cassia Restaurant, December is a celebration of flavour and atmosphere. It is the Festive Season, afterall, so we hope you packed some pants with a bit of stretch in them! Overlooking the hotel’s manicured lawns and the distant spray of the Falls, our award-winning restaurant serves a seasonal menu inspired by local ingredients and regional flair.

Guests gather beneath the golden shower trees (Cassia fistula) for laughter-filled dinners, where cicadas hum in the background. It’s the perfect setting for a Christmas meal or to see in the New Year!

Adventure Awaits: From the Air to the Rapids

If your idea of a December getaway involves a dash of adrenaline, Victoria Falls is here to deliver.

Take to the skies on a helicopter or microlight flight for a bird’s-eye view of the Falls, an unforgettable way to appreciate their scale and power, or opt to do one of the high wire activities like zip-lining, bungee jumping or gorge swinging.

Adventure and relaxation go hand in hand here, and these experiences rank among the most exhilarating things to do in Victoria Falls.

Browse the full list of activity options here.

    Explore Beyond the Falls

Victoria Falls is more than its namesake waterfall, it’s a gateway to an entire region of culture, wildlife, and wonder.

Spend an afternoon exploring the open plains of the Zambezi National Park, where elephants, giraffes, and buffalo roam freely. Visit local markets for handcrafted souvenirs, or discover contemporary Zimbabwean art at nearby galleries.

If time allows, a day trip across the border to Livingstone offers a fascinating glimpse into Zambia’s side of the Falls; two countries, one incredible landmark.

  • Victoria Falls: Rainy Season vs. Dry Season

Victoria Falls: Rainy Season vs. Dry Season

When deciding on the best time to visit Victoria Falls, bear in mind our two overarching seasons – rainy season and dry season. Here is everything you need to know about the weather before booking your holiday to Ilala Lodge Hotel!

The beautiful town of Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but your experience and activity list can vary greatly depending on when you visit. To help you decide on the best time to visit Victoria Falls – according to your and your family’s needs and preferences – let’s compare our two chief seasons!

Here in Victoria Falls, spring, summer, autumn and winter are merely pitstops under the banner of our true yearly markers: Rainy season and dry season. Each season offers its own unique set of charms and challenges – let’s walk through them together.

The Dry Season: May to October

    Comfortable Weather

The dry season, spanning from May to October, covers the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn, winter, and early spring. During this period, temperatures are moderate and extremely comfortable, with temperatures rarely dropping below 13°C (55°F). This is with the exception of October, when things really start to heat up. Our winters might be a world away from those chilly white-outs you experience in the Northern Hemisphere, but don’t be fooled – you’ll still need to pack some warm clothes in your suitcase.

    Best Bush (And Falls) Visibility

The dry weather means the bush surrounding Victoria Falls is less dense, making this the ideal time of year for planning a safari to one of the national parks near Vic Falls. Animals gather around the shrinking water sources, making them easier to spot.

(There are plenty of fabulous day trip options – simply ask our Tours Desk to help you.)

The clear skies also ensure that you have an unobstructed view of the majestic Falls when you walk along the Cliff Path, or dine on the award-winning Cassia Restaurant’s terrace.

    Ideal For Adventure

Whether you’re planning a thrilling white-water rafting trip or a scenic helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, the dry season offers stable weather conditions that are ideal for outdoor activities.

    Larger Crowds

Because the dry season is the most popular time to visit Victoria Falls, you might encounter more tourists, especially during peak months. It’s wise to book your accommodations and activities well in advance to get the best rates.

The Green Season: November to April

    Lush Scenery

The Green Season, beginning with the first rains in November, transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of green. This season is aptly named for its rich, lush vegetation that creates a stunning contrast to the dry season’s more arid environment.

(Note: The Victoria Falls rainforest is always green thanks to the constant spray it experiences from the water pushed out of the Falls’ chasm. It’s well worth looking ‘touristy’ and wearing that rain poncho, especially if you have electronics on you. Otherwise, make like some and revel in getting soaked to the skin! There’s something magical about being doused in water from The Smoke That Thunders…)

    A Birding Bonanza

Migrant birds arrive with the rains, making the rainy season an excellent time for birdwatching enthusiasts. The bush becomes a haven for bird species, and the improved birding conditions are a significant draw for many visitors.

    Less Crowded

With fewer tourists visiting the Falls during this season, you can enjoy a more tranquil experience at Victoria Falls. This is ideal for those who prefer a quieter escape.

    Hot & Humid Weather

November to February can be extremely hot, with temperatures soaring up to 40°C (104°F). As the dad joke goes: ‘It’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the humidity!’ While some cope well with suana-like conditions, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The hot weather does make for excellent swimming opportunities though, and we’ve got a sparkling blue pool with your name on it.

    Variable Water Levels

While the rains bring vibrant changes, they also lead to variable river levels. Deep rains in January and February can lead to flooding, which means the Zambezi River might be at its fullest by March and April, affecting the visibility and volume of the falls.

Note: For more information on the water volume of the Falls, click here. River water volume does not necessarily correlate with the wet and dry seasons because the rains from the Falls’ source on the Angolan border still need to travel many kilometres before they reach us!

    A Final Word

So, when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

It truly depends on what you’re seeking in your adventure. If you’re after comfortable weather and easy wildlife spotting, the dry season is perfect for you. However, if you’re excited by lush landscapes, birdwatching, a more serene atmosphere and plenty of pool time, the Green Season offers a unique and rewarding experience.

No matter when you choose to visit, Victoria Falls promises an unforgettable adventure with its breathtaking views and diverse experiences. Plan accordingly, and you’re sure to have a memorable stay with us at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

5 Cocktails To Try At Our Poolside Bar

Whether you’re a discerning traveller or an incurable explorer, there is a cocktail to suit every personality. Relax at our cosy Poolside Bar and order something to your taste as you watch the sun set over Victoria Falls.

Ilala Lodge Hotel’s Poolside Bar is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing in Victoria Falls. (Especially if you’ve participated in any high-wire activities like bungee jumping and need a soothing beverage to calm your nerves…)

Located between our two swimming pools, the Poolside Bar’s finishings are made from locally-sourced, Zimbabwean teak railway sleepers, a unique feature of our historic hotel, lending warmth and comfort to the bar’s interior.

Looking out, you will be greeted by a view of our sprawling lawns that run flush with the border of Victoria Falls National Park. This means that your favourite sundowner cocktail can be enjoyed while gazing at the spray rising up from Victoria Falls, only a few kilometres away. On quiet nights, you can even hear the water’s mighty crash!

Depending on your mood or the occasion, here is our recommendation of five cocktails you simply must try at our Poolside Bar!

    Margarita – A Classic

Components: Tequila, Cointreau & Lime Juice

Sip on this sophisticated classic as you gaze out at the beauty of our grounds.

Families of warthogs and impalas are known to graze on our lawns in the late afternoon and early evening. Could there be anything more luxurious than sipping on a Margarita as you enjoy this beautiful sight?

The Margarita is one of the world’s most popular cocktails and modern renditions often see it served frozen as a type of ‘slushy’. Come and try Ilala Lodge Hotel’s classic rendition in Victoria Falls!

Rock Shandy – A Local Favourite

Components: Lemonade, Soda Water & Bitters

There is nothing more refreshing than a Rock Shandy after a long day of exploring Victoria Falls on foot.

Rock shandies are neither sweet, nor bitter. It’s the fragrant flavour, thanks to the bitters, that makes this the perfect drink for any occasion, especially if you’re looking to avoid alcohol.

While bitters does contain alcohol, the spirit is used in such small quantities (a few drops) that most soda-based drinks containing bitters are considered non-alcoholic. (Think of it like adding vanilla essence to your cake mixture!)

Zambezi Blue Haze – A Pop Of Colour

Components: Vodka, Blue Curacao & Lemonade

This colourful treat is our hotel’s Signature Cocktail!

Your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel isn’t complete without sampling the Zambezi Blue Haze – a flamboyant ode to our surroundings and the vibrance of life beside the Zambezi River.

Sample this one at your own risk, but do sample it. The Haze is best enjoyed at sundown from the comfort of a lounger beside the pool.

Strawberry Mojito – A Fruity Sensation

Components: Bacardi, Mint, Strawberry & Soda Water

A fruity twist on a tried and true classic, the Strawberry Mojito is perfect for sunny afternoons on the pool deck.

Did you know that mojitos originate in Havana, Cuba? The original mix was used as medicine!

As we know, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Or, in this case, a few strawberries…

    Don Pedro – After Dinner

Components: Amarula, Kahlua or Whisky with Vanilla Ice-Cream

Combine dessert with your after-dinner drink when you order a Don Pedro – a classic South African dessert cocktail.

Don Pedros combine your choice of Kahlua liqueur, Amarula liqueur or whiskey with vanilla ice-cream – like a milkshake for adults!

The luxurious flavours of this cocktail make it a decadent treat.

The Poolside Bar is open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM.

    Family-Friendly Activities in Victoria Falls

As one of the primary resorts in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, we’ve got an exciting list of activities up our sleeve, ranging from adrenaline-inducing to scenic and relaxing.

    Ra-Ikane River Cruise

Our fleet of river cruise boats are the perfect place from which to enjoy a legendary Zimbabwean sunset. These boats exude old-world charm and give you the opportunity to get up-close and personal with the animals and birdlife of the Zambezi River.

    See The Falls

This is the ideal activity for all ages and the mighty falls are, after all, why you’re here!

After entering the park, there are a myriad of walkways that lead you through the rainforest as well as a main Cliff Path that skirts the ravine of the falls and offers you plenty of viewing points from which to gawk at ‘The Smoke That Thunders’. The pathways are well-maintained and suited to all walking abilities.

Prepare for shrieks of joy when the spray off the water soaks you through when walking along the rainforest pathways. Or pick up a rain poncho at the entrance to the rainforest to ensure you don’t get fully soaked. This is not a drill – it gets really wet out there – and that’s part of the fun.

We also offer guided tours of the falls for those who want to get the most out of this experience.

    Game-Viewing

Ilala Lodge Hotel is close to The Victoria Falls National Park and the Zambezi National Park, both of which boast a large variety of animals, including large mammals like elephant, leopard, lion and buffalo.

Speak to our Activities Desk or reservations team for more information when booking.

    Cultural Dining

Our sister property, Palm River Hotel, offers an authentic, African-style barbeque dinner right on the banks of the Zambezi River.
Enjoy a 3-course meal al fresco as river cruises pass you by on the Zambezi. As the sun sets, your feast will be illuminated by lanterns and the starry night sky. This is a brand new, unmissable offering!

  • A Series of Sunrises Over Victoria Falls

A Series of Sunrises Over Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls has an abundance of beauty – from magical rainbows, incredible sunsets and thundering sheets of water, it is a truly spectacular sight. What the Victoria Falls also does really well is show-stopping sunrises! However, these are a little harder to see in person as our beds are so super comfortable, we completely understand if you want to lie in them for a little longer! That is why we are putting together a year-long series showcasing the spectacular sunrises of the Victoria Falls so you can watch the changing of the seasons…and all captured by drone just for you.

    April

The dawn of a new video series!

    May

See a stunning rainbow and a tower of rising pink spray in this month’s sunrise

    June

At the mid-point through winter, the majestic Victoria Falls continues to cascade with its mighty grandeur

    July

July In this month’s sunrise video ☀️ you will notice a lot less spray AND less water falling over the edge of Victoria Falls. This is because the Zambezi River has recorded its lowest water levels for July 2019, compared to previous years!

Low water levels mean you’ll experience spectacular sightings of the rock formation behind the falls, as well as the perfect conditions for many water activities such as white-water rafting!

    August

August marks the midpoint of the dry season in Victoria Falls! Months without rainfall result in the lowest water levels of the Zambezi River in decades! Wildlife, such as the buffalo seen in this video, scour the dry landscape in search of water to drink. While the Falls are at their lowest, this Natural World Wonder is still an incredible sight to behold!

    September

We thought that August would be the lowest point of the year, but the Zambezi River has dropped further this month, but it is still as impressive as ever in September!

    October

The mighty Victoria Falls waterfall is flowing at its lowest since 1996! Even during the driest season of the year, the Zimbabwean side of this World Wonder is still a breathtaking sight to see. Water levels are expected to drop further until the rains begin to fill the catchment areas upstream, so keep watching our monthly videos to see these dramatic changes!

    November

This month, the water levels of the Zambezi River are starting to increase ever so slightly with the first rains arriving!
