    The 5 Best Birds to Tick Off Your List in Victoria Falls

    1. African Paradise Flycatcher

    It’s hard not to stop and stare when an African Paradise Flycatcher flits through the foliage. With its rust-red plumage, blue eye-ring and long, ribbon-like tail (on the males during breeding season), this small bird brings a touch of theatre to Ilala’s grounds. They move with agile, precise bursts, snatching insects mid-air and darting between branches.

    You’re most likely to see them in the gardens or in the adjacent rainforest, where they prefer dappled light among the tree branches. They’re a reminder of how close the wild truly is, even within the serene grounds of the hotel.

    2. Trumpeter Hornbill

    No other bird quite embodies the drama of Victoria Falls like the Trumpeter Hornbill. Its loud, laughing call reverberates through the rainforest canopy and over the lawns of Ilala Lodge Hotel, especially in the mornings. These striking black-and-white birds (Quite prehistoric-looking, wouldn’t you agree?), with their curved bills and prominent casque, often move around in small family groups, feeding on fruit trees near the edge of the park.

    They are excellent indicators of the environment’s overall health as hornbills rely on old trees with natural cavities for nesting, many of which thrive in this area thanks to the moisture and protection of the Falls’ microclimate. Catching a glimpse of these impressive birds is like experiencing a herald of the rainforest itself!

    3. African Fish Eagle

    The African Fish Eagle is perhaps the most unmistakable of all birds in Zimbabwe, and its haunting call is often described as the “voice of Africa.” With chestnut plumage, a snow-white head, and a commanding presence, this raptor reigns over the Zambezi River.

    4. Schalow’s Turaco

    Of all the feathered residents near the Falls, few inspire such admiration as the Schalow’s Turaco. Endemic to a limited range in south-central Africa, it’s one of the most special sightings for birders visiting the region. Its emerald body, crimson flight feathers, and tall green crest make it a thrill to spot among the treetops.

    You might hear it before you see it: A distinctive “kow-kow-kow” call echoing through the canopy of the rainforest just beyond Ilala’s garden fence.

    5. White-browed Robin-Chat

    Even if you don’t consider yourself a birder, the White-browed Robin-Chat will likely win you over with its voice. Its melodic, almost conversational song greets guests each morning at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

    Recognisable by its bright orange underparts and white eyebrow, this bird thrives in gardens and riverine thickets. Many guests see them hopping confidently across the pathways, tail flicking as they search for insects. They’re among the friendliest birds in Zimbabwe, often so close you can watch them over your breakfast coffee.

    From source to smoke…

    There is a waterway that winds through southern Africa: Ancient, constant, alive. It rises quietly in the wetlands of north-western Zambia, flowing through miombo woodland and grassy plains. Over more than 2500 kilometres, it gathers force, carving a path through six countries (Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique) before plunging, with thunder and mist, into the gorge at Victoria Falls.

    This is the Zambezi River. From source to smoke, it carries more than water. It gives life, shapes cultures, and weaves stories passed from one generation to the next.

    Below, we share some of the river’s story; one that will form an integral part of your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

    The Very Beginning

    When standing before the majesty of Victoria Falls, it’s striking to consider the Zambezi’s humble origin: A marshy spring near Kalene Hill, close to Zambia’s border with Angola.

    This peaceful source is considered sacred by local communities, the beginning of something mighty. It’s almost impossible to imagine, from these still headwaters, the drama and grandeur to come!

    As it journeys south and east, the river changes shape, name, and meaning. Among the Lozi people of western Zambia, it is called liambai, “the great river.”

    The Swelling River

    By the time it reaches western Zambia, the Zambezi expands into the vast Barotse Floodplain, a seasonal inland sea that swells with the rains.

    Here, the river plays a vital role in Lozi traditions, most notably during Kuomboka, a vibrant ceremony marking the Litunga’s (king’s) annual move from lowland Lealui to the higher ground of Limulunga. The royal barge journey, accompanied by music and fanfare, reflects both the rhythm of the river and how it shapes the lives of those who reside on its banks.

    The Grand Descent

    Near the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the river narrows between basalt cliffs and plunges more than 100 metres into a deep chasm at Victoria Falls…

    Victoria Falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders”, is not just a waterfall, but a full-sensory experience.

    The roar can often be heard from Ilala Lodge Hotel, though never intrusively. A constant mist rises from the gorge, nourishing the lush rainforest opposite, which guests can explore via the scenic Cliff Path.

    In many ways, the Falls marks a shift in the Zambezi’s journey. We think of the river now as, ‘upstream from the Falls’ and  ‘downstream from the Falls’.

    After the Falls

    For many visitors to Ilala Lodge Hotel, Victoria Falls is their first encounter with the Zambezi, but the river’s story continues long after this great descent.

    Beyond the Falls, the Zambezi snakes through a twisting gorge system more than 100 km long. These churning rapids draw thrill-seekers from around the world for white-water rafting and river adventures.

    Further downstream lies Lake Kariba, one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs. Its construction in the 1950s displaced thousands and gave fuel to the existing legend of Nyami Nyami, the river god. Many believe the dam enraged him by dividing his watery kingdom and separating him from his wife.

    Past Kariba, the river flows through Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe, famed for its wildlife. Finally, the Zambezi reaches Mozambique, fanning into a broad delta before merging quietly with the Indian Ocean at Chinde: A serene ending to an epic journey.

    Restoring Ndlovu Secondary School

    At Ilala Lodge Hotel, giving back to our community is an integral part of what we stand for. As part of the Palm Hospitality Group’s (PHG) broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, our recent partnership with Ndlovu Secondary School stands as a proud example of how sustainable development can change lives.

    Let’s take a closer look…

    A Community In Need

    Our partnership with Ndlovu Secondary School began in August 2024 with one clear goal: To help the school recover from major storm damage and become safe to reopen. The previous year, strong winds and heavy rains had torn off large sections of the roof, leaving the school in disrepair. During our visit, it quickly became clear that the most urgent needs were access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities.

    To ensure the success of the initiative, we partnered with Corinthians, a local NGO focused on sports development and youth upliftment. We also engaged closely with the local leadership, including the Chief, headman, councillor, and school development committee, securing community support every step of the way.

     

    Water: A Basic Right, A First Priority

    Our first mission was clear: Restore access to clean water.

    The school’s solar-powered borehole had long been out of commission, and both teachers and learners were relying on pit latrines due to non-functional water systems and a damaged soakaway. Even the children’s toilet block was roofless, exposing them further to unhygienic conditions.

    In January 2025, our dedicated PHG maintenance team got to work. The worn-out 200-metre cable was replaced, the solar borehole system rehabilitated, and the solar panels were serviced – restoring water access not only to the school, but also to the teachers’ cottages and the wider community.

    Recognising that sustainable water access also requires adequate storage, we installed four 2 500-litre water tanks and constructed a tank stand for a 5 000-litre reservoir.

    With a total storage capacity of 15 000 litres, Ndlovu Secondary School is now better equipped to expand its agricultural projects and maintain good hygiene practices.

    Beyond water and sanitation, our team also turned attention to the school’s administration block, which had suffered major damage during the same storm. With the help of a local construction company, some classrooms had already been re-roofed. We stepped in to repair leaking ceilings, repaint the offices, reception area, and computer room, and give the entire block a much-needed facelift.

    What was once a tired-looking space plagued by water damage now looks fresh, clean, and welcoming!

    Celebrating Progress

    In a heartwarming handover ceremony, eight members from PHG (made up of both Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel) and three representatives from Corinthians travelled to Ndlovu to officially mark the completion of the project’s first phase. Our Human Resources Manager, Phillip, led the team, and we were honoured by the presence of local leaders, including the councillor, headman, and representatives from the school development committee, National Parks, and Breeze FM.

    The event was a celebration in every sense. In a generous and unexpected gesture, the councillor donated a cow to feed everyone in attendance. Watching the children enjoy a hearty meal of sadza, rice, meat, and cold drinks reminded us why we do this work: Real change creates real joy!

    World Environment Day Schools Debate

    On the same day as the handover celebration, Ndlovu Secondary School also hosted the 2025 World Environment Day Schools Debate, proudly sponsored by Palm Hospitality Group. Eight schools participated (three rural and five urban) with the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The day began with a community clean-up, followed by the debate, which focused on wetland conservation and other Sustainable Development Goals. Urban schools showed strong performances, highlighting the need for better resources in rural areas like Ndlovu. It was a powerful day of awareness, learning, and community connection.

    This past Easter, we embraced the spirit of giving with thoughtful donations, bringing comfort and dignity to those in our community who need it most.

    Comfort For Our Elders

    The heart of any community lies in its elders, and this Easter we were honoured to bring a little extra comfort to the residents of the Old People’s Home. With a donation of 20 bedsheets, 20 towels and 50 pillowcases, our goal was to brighten their living spaces and remind them that they are seen, loved, and respected.

    One of the highlights of this visit was the joy experienced at seeing Mumba, a familiar face who regularly visits the home for fellowship. His warm reception from the residents touched all of us deeply and reminded us of why these moments matter so much.

    Chinotimba Clinic: Supporting Our Local Healthcare Heroes

    Healthcare workers are the unsung heroes of every community, and Chinotimba Clinic in Victoria Falls is no exception. Despite limited resources, this municipal facility remains a vital lifeline for thousands. (Especially mothers and newborns in the clinic’s busy maternity ward, which houses more than 20 beds.)

    This Easter, we delivered essential linen to the clinic to support the hardworking staff in their day-to-day care of patients. With no washing machine on site and ongoing structural challenges – like a damaged roof – every donation makes a difference. The gratitude and excitement from the team reminded us that helping healthcare heroes goes far beyond material support; it’s about standing in solidarity with those who care for others.

    Spreading Warmth Through ‘Donate a Blanket’

    As temperatures begin to dip heading into the cooler months, we teamed up with the Donate a Blanket Group to help provide comfort to the most vulnerable members of our community. This grassroots organisation focuses on assisting seniors and orphans in Ward 11 of Mfelandawonye, located in the Mkosana township.

    Ilala Lodge Hotel proudly contributed 40 pillowcases, 20 bed sheets, and 20 towels towards this initiative.

    It’s almost time to lace up your shoes and join us for one of Africa’s most thrilling running events!

    This year’s Victoria Falls Marathon is taking place on 6 July 2025, promising a wonderful blend of challenge and stunning scenery. Trust us: Running past one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World is not something you’ll soon forget!

    Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner, a social runner or just looking for a fun and active way to explore Victoria Falls during your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel, this event is truly for everyone.

    Below we’ll break down a few race details for interested athletes and explore how you can broaden your Victoria Falls trip post-finish line.

    Choose Your Event

    The Victoria Falls Marathon truly is for everyone, offering events suited to every level of ability.

    Runners can choose from multiple distances:

    Full Marathon (42.195 km): For the ultimate endurance test, this category is open to men and women 20 years and older.
    Half Marathon (21.0975 km): A great challenge for those who love long distances, this category is open to men and women 18 years and older.
    Half Marathon Relay (21 km split between two runners): Perfect for those who prefer a team effort, participants must be 15 years or older.
    Specially-Abled: This category is open to tricycles, handcycles and wheelchairs, participants must be 18 years or older.
    Fun Run (7 km): A short, fun route for all fitness levels.

    The Route: Where Scenery Meets Adventure

    We think you’ll find this marathon route to be varied, lined with supporters and as spectacular as the Falls themselves!

    Starting and finishing at Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls town (only 1,4 km from Ilala Lodge Hotel), runners will cross the legendary Victoria Falls Bridge – turning around before they reach Zambia – and double back to experience the view from the other direction as well.

    The run then follows Zambezi Drive, winding through pristine wildlife areas where you might spot elephants, impalas and curious warthogs wondering what on Earth is going on in their backyard… Not to worry, rangers patrol these portions of the route to ensure the safety of all participants.

    Additionally, there will, of course, be regular water stations along the way, while enthusiastic locals and race supporters line the streets to cheer you on. When the legs are weary, these cheers are endlessly uplifting.

    While this is a race, we think it’s worth mentioning that it’s an experience, too. Enjoy the journey and spare some time on the clock for the many spectacular viewpoints.

    We are over the moon to share that the refurbishment of our award-winning Cassia Restaurant is officially complete – on schedule, no less – and that we’ve been welcoming guests into this stunning new space since the beginning of the month.

    The idea was to refresh our dining area while still retaining that authentic feel that guests have come to love over the years, and we believe we’ve succeeded in doing exactly that.

    We’ve transformed both the inside and the outside of the restaurant into environments that blend elegance with functionality, providing an atmosphere of understated luxury we know you’ll love.

    A Refined Dining Experience

    As guests enter the newly refurbished Cassia Restaurant, they are greeted by rich wooden accents and warm tones that create a welcoming atmosphere.

    These elements are thoughtfully complemented by botanical wallpaper and a striking green herringbone tile backsplash, which adds a touch of modern elegance to our hotel’s timeless charm.

    The colour of the chairs picks up on this natural palette and their plush appearance marries well with the space’s overall cosy feel.

    Luxury, The African Way

    One of the standout features of the newly designed main dining room is its iconic thatched ceiling, which remains a symbol of African architectural heritage.

    We love the warmth created by this uniquely African roofing style, and have sought to enhance it by adding large, decorative chandeliers to draw the eye upwards. The result is both grand – due to the scope and height of the ceiling – and cosy.

    Below foot, the stonework keeps guests grounded, while lending to the overall natural feel of the space.

    Redesigned Buffet Area

    Our buffet area has been reimagined to offer functionality, flow and elevated presentation.

    Custom wooden serving stations display a range of freshly prepared dishes – like cut fruit in the mornings – that highlight the vibrancy of our local cuisine. We hope this set-up offers a feast for your eyes, preparing your palate for a wonderful meal!

    Off to the side, you’ll find a state-of-the-art coffee station, complete with sparkling service sets and rich copper accents on the wall.

    Behind The Scenes

    To further enhance our guests’ experience – as well as that of our dedicated culinary team – we’ve upgraded our kitchen facilities as well.

    With new tiling, state-of-the-art extraction systems and modern cooking equipment, our talented kitchen staff are now empowered to craft even more exceptional dining experiences for you.

    These upgrades ensure the highest standards of food preparation, allowing for the seamless delivery of dishes that delight the senses and showcase the expertise of our chefs.

    Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

    And finally, what about the terrace?

    We know our guests have long-loved Cassia Restaurant’s outside area for its unforgettable view over the hotel’s lush, rolling lawns and the sight of smoke rising up from the falls only a few kilometres away.

    For our al fresco diners, new chairs and décor have been added to the terrace, adding a touch of modern comfort, while maintaining the charm of the space. The interplay between the interior and exterior dining areas is now more seamless than ever, providing guests with elegance and comfort no matter where they choose to sit. Even seated indoors, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the lush gardens through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, which bathe the space in natural light and invite the outdoors in.

    We don’t need to tell you that renovations come with their own set of challenges, but we’ve been incredibly fortunate in the professionalism, quality and timeliness in which all parties came together to make this refurbishment a success.

    The Palm River Hotel’s Vegetable Plantation

    The vegetable plantation at The Palm River Hotel is grown in fertile soil fed by the waters of the Zambezi River.

    This nutrient-rich environment offers an ideal setting to grow a wide range of vegetables, herbs, and even spices!

    Through innovative sustainable practices, we have created a robust garden that supports the kitchens of both The Palm River Hotel and Ilala Lodge Hotel. Compost is collected from both properties and used to nourish the soil, ensuring that all the produce is organically grown and free from synthetic fertilisers.

    The result? A consistent supply of high-quality ingredients that make their way into our kitchens, where they help to inspire delightful dishes for our guests.

    From Garden to Plate

    At The Palm River Hotel, our vegetable plantation spans both a large Potager Garden and a smaller Kitchen Potager, providing a wide variety of fresh produce.

    This includes everything from leafy greens like Cos Lettuce and Wild Rocket to fragrant herbs like Rosemary, Mint, and Basil, all of which find their way onto the plates of diners at The Cassia Restaurant. We also grow vibrant flowers, microgreens, and exciting varieties like heirloom tomatoes and dragon fruit, each adding unique flavours and textures to our menus.

    Whether it’s the crispness of freshly harvested lettuce, the zing of locally-grown lemongrass, or the fragrant rosemary used in our heartier dishes, our shared garden inspires our kitchen teams to keep dreaming up new flavour combinations to suit the season.

    Bidding Farewell to an Ilala Legend

    The end of 2024 marked the closing of an incredible chapter for Ilala Lodge Hotel as we bid farewell to Peter Msindo, a beloved member of our hotel family, who retired after 33-years of service.

    Peter’s story is so closely intertwined with the very essence of Ilala Lodge Hotel that it is almost impossible to imagine our every day without him. On 1 March 1991, as we opened our doors for the very first time, Peter was there, stepping through them as our front porter and beginning what would evolve into a long and fruitful career. Over the years, he became a living testament to dedication, growth, and exceptional service – qualities that have defined his time with us and left an indelible mark on Ilala Lodge Hotel.

    Peter’s unwavering commitment and natural leadership abilities allowed him to rise through the ranks with grace. In 1999, he was promoted to Head Porter, and not long after, he transitioned to our front desk team.

    For nearly 25 years, Peter greeted countless guests with the warm, welcoming smile that became his signature and the hallmark of Ilala Lodge’s hospitality. Whether it was offering directions, sharing local insights, or simply making a guest feel truly at home, his genuine kindness made all who entered our doors feel like part of the Ilala family.

    Born and raised in Mhondoro, near St Theresa Nyanda School in Zimbabwe, Peter has always maintained a deep sense of humility and family. His unwavering dedication to Ilala Lodge never took away from his role as a loving husband, father to four children, and proud grandfather to five grandchildren. His family values have always shone through, not only in how he cared for his own but also in the way he treated every guest and colleague as part of his extended family. His approach to hospitality was not just professional, it was personal – built on the same love, respect, and care that he showed those closest to him.

    As Peter embarks on this new chapter of his life, we celebrate not just a colleague, but a true cornerstone of Ilala Lodge’s legacy. His exceptional service and heartfelt hospitality have shaped the heart and soul of our hotel. However, his impact will continue to resonate in the way we serve our guests and welcome visitors to Victoria Falls.

    Peter, thank you for your 33 years of dedication, hard work, and unwavering positivity. You have touched the lives of countless people and made Ilala Lodge Hotel feel like a second home to all of us.
